an ancient, large, and strong town of France, and capital of the territory of Messin, with a citadel and a bishop's see, whose bishop used to hold the title of a prince of the empire. The cathedral church is one of the finest in Europe, and the square called Coslin and the house of the governor are worth seeing. The Jews live in a part of the town by themselves, where they have a synagogue. The sweetmeats they make here are in high esteem. It is seated at the confluence of the rivers Moselle and Seille. E.
