MOLOSSI

Volume 14 · 82 words · 1823 Edition

a people of Epirus, who inhabited that part of the country which was called Molossia, or Molossus, from King Molossus, a son of Pyrrhus and Andromache. This country had the bay of Ambracia on the south, and the country of the Perrhaebians on the east. The dogs of the place were famous, and received the name of Molossi among the Romans. Dodona was the capital of the country, according to some writers. Others, however, reckon it as the chief city of Thesprotia.
