a country of Southern Africa, lying north-eastward of the Cape of Good Hope. The air of this country is very temperate; the land fertile in pastures and all the necessaries of life, being watered by several rivers. The inhabitants are rich in black cattle, which they value more than gold. They have a vast number of elephants, as appears from the great quantity of ivory that is exported. There is also a considerable trade in gold dust. This country is divided into seven provinces or petty kingdoms, vassals to the king; viz. Momotapa Proper, Quiteve, Manica, Inhambana, Inhemur, Sabia, and Sofala.
