It is delightfully situated between the mountains of Olympus and a chain of others, and was formerly well fortified by the Venetians; but the works are now in ruins. It was once nine miles in circumference, but was reduced to three by the Venetians. There are plantations of olives, almonds, lemons, oranges, mulberries, and cypress trees, interspersed among the houses, which give the town a delightful appearance. The church of Sancta Sophia is an old Gothic structure, which the Turks have turned into a mosque, and destroyed the ornaments. It is 100 miles west of Tripoli, and 160 south-west of Aleppo. E.
