is one of the better sort of horses used by noblemen or others for state; and sometimes of old Palfray taken for a horse fit for a woman to ride. Camden says, that William Fauconberge held the manor of Cuckney, in the county of Nottingham, in serjeantry, by the service of shoeing the king's palfray when the king should come to Mansfield.

**PALICAUD**, or **Palgatcherry**, a fortress of considerable strength in India, which commands the passage between the two coasts of Malabar and Coromandel, by way of the Trichinopoly and Coimbettore countries; there is also a communication with it through the Nayre country. It was held by the English; and was of great importance to them, when Coimbettore was in the hands of Tippoo, because, by our holding this place on the west, and Dindigul on the east of Coimbettore, that province was of little use to him in the time of war, without a very large force to protect it.
