in Roman antiquity, a mantle which women wore over the gown called *stola*. It was borne on the left shoulder; whence passing to the other side, under the right arm, the two ends were bound under the left arm, leaving the breast and arm quite bare. It had a great many folds, and derived its name from παλλάς, to shake or tremble.
