a royal borough and county town of Peebles-shire or Tweedale, is situated on the banks of the Tweed, 22 miles south from Edinburgh. Peebles was a royal residence in the time of James I. of Scotland; and here it is supposed, he composed the poem of "Peebles at the Play." Peebles has considerable woollen manufactures, and excellent beer. The population in 1801 was 2088, and in 1811, 2485.
