a province of Brazil, in South America, bounded on the north and east by the ocean, on the south by Bahia, and on the west by Piau. It is about 300 miles in length and as much in breadth. The Dutch became masters of it in 1630, but the Portuguese soon after retook it. It produces a great quantity of sugar, cotton, and Brazil wood. An insurrection broke out in this province on the 7th April 1817. The Portuguese authorities were driven out, and a republican constitution proclaimed; but in the following month the revolutionists were subdued.
