PILGRIM

Volume 16 · 49 words · 1823 Edition

one who travels through foreign countries to visit holy places, and to pay his devotion to the relics of dead saints. See PILGRIMAGE.

The word is formed from the Flemish pelgrim, or Italian pelegrino, which signifies the same; and those originally from the Latin peregrinus, a "stranger or traveller."
