a territory of Europe in Dalmatin, lying along the coast of the gulf of Venice, about 55 miles in length, and 20 in breadth. It was formerly a republic under the protection of the Turks and Venetians, but fell under the dominion of the French, and was since transferred to the Austrians, in whose possession it remains.
