a department in the north-west of France, comprising the greater part of the ancient Picardy. The soil yields corn, flax, hemp, legumes, and excellent pasturage, but no vines or maize. Sheep are pretty numerous. The manufactures are, especially those of woollens, among the most extensive in France. The territorial extent is 604,456 hectares, and the population in 1817 was 495,058. Amiens is the chief town.
