STEREOTYPE PRINTING

Volume 19 · 92 words · 1823 Edition

a method of printing, which was introduced into this country by William Ged of Edinburgh before the middle of the 18th century, and which has been revived of late, and greatly improved by the French. It has also been brought into practice in Britain by Earl Stanhope, who has produced some beautiful specimens of it. Some persons seem disposed to dispute the invention of Ged, seeing that the same method of printing by wooden blocks was practised by the Chinese and Japanese many hundred years ago. See Ged, life of, and Printing.
