SUCCUBUS

Volume 19 · 61 words · 1823 Edition

term used by some writers for a daemon who assumes the shape of a woman, and as such lies with a man; in which sense it stands opposed to incubus, which was a daemon in form of a man, that lies with a woman. But the truth is, the succubus is only a species of the nightmare. See Medicine, No. 329.
