a department in the south-east of France, lying next to Italy, and along the shores of the Mediterranean. It is mountainous, and deficient in grain, but produces excellent wine, and is the only district of France where oranges and some other fruits belonging to the climates of Spain and Italy will ripen. Considerable quantities of raw silk are produced. Its manufactures consist chiefly of soap, paper, coarse cloth, pottery, leather, and some silk articles; and it has very little trade. Its extent is 725,580 hectares, and its population in 1817 was 283,296. Draguignan is the chief town.
