an island of Denmark, situated in the Little Belt, or entrance into the Baltic Sea, between Sleswick and Funen, 100 miles west of Copenhagen. It extends in length six leagues, and about two in breadth. The soil is fertile, producing abundance of fruit and variety of grain, with large crops of aniseeds, a carminative much used in seasoning food, and mixing with the bread, over all the Danish dominions.
