APHRODITE

Volume 3 · 86 words · 1842 Edition

in Mythology, a name of Venus, derived from ἀφρός, froth; because, according to the poets, Venus is supposed to have been produced from the froth or foam of the sea.

APHTHARTODOCETÆ, a sect, sworn enemies of the council of Chalcedon. The word is derived from ἀφθαρτος, incorruptible, and δοκεῖν, I imagine; and was given them because they imagined that the body of Jesus Christ was incorruptible and impassible, and not capable of death. They arose among the Eutychians, and made their appearance in the year 535.
