a town in the hundred of Chart, in the county of Kent. It has a market on Tuesday. It is 57 miles from London and 12 from Canterbury, in a district of great fertility, watered by the rivers Esk and Stour. The church is a fine old Gothic edifice, containing a monument to a countess of Athol more than 400 years old. The population was, in 1801, 2151; in 1811, 2532; and in 1821, 2773.
