or BALLIOL, Sir John de, founder of Baliol College in Oxford, was the son of Hugh Baliol, of Bernard's Castle, in the diocese of Durham, and very eminent on account of his power and riches. During the contests and wars between King Henry III. and his barons he firmly adhered to the king. In 1263 he began the foundation and endowment of Baliol College, which was afterwards perfected by his widow. He died in the year 1269.
