BANE

Volume 4 · 60 words · 1842 Edition

from the Saxon *bane*, a murderer, signifies destruction or overthrow. Thus, "I will be the *bane* of such a man," is a common saying; when a person receives a mortal injury by any thing, we say, "it was his *bane*;" and he who is the cause of another man's death is said to be *le bane*, that is, a malefactor.
