an arrondissement of the department of the Lower Pyrenees in France, extending over 491 square miles, and comprehending eight cantons and fifty-four communes, with 69,498 inhabitants. The capital is the city of the same name. It is situated at the junction of the river Nive with the Adour, about three miles from the sea, and is defended by a citadel and two castles. It is tolerably well built, and is a manufacturing town, with extensive trade in the export of cork, corn, wax, hams, and other goods. It contains, besides the garrison, 14,000 inhabitants, of whom about 4000 are Jews.
