UPPER and NETHER, in Ancient Geography, a town of Samaria, in the tribe of Ephraim, built by Shera, grand-daughter of Ephraim, and restored by Solomon. We know more of the nether than of the upper town; it was situated on a mountain, and stood on the public road to Lydda and Cesarea, distant an hundred stadia, or twelve miles, from Jerusalem.
