BETTIAH

a district of Hindostan, in the province of Bahar, situated between the 27th and 28th degrees of north latitude. It contains an area of 2546 square miles, and is bounded on the north by the Terriani, on the east by Moc-wanny and Tirhoot, and on the west by the river Gunduck. The chief towns are Bettiah and Boggab, and the principal river the Gunduck, the banks of which, and the district generally, are covered with large timber trees for ship-building and for masts. A considerable portion of the country is uncultivated, and still remains covered with wood. The town of Bettiah is 90 miles N.N.W. from Patna. Long. 84. 40. E. Lat. 26. 47. N.
