market-town in the east ward of the county of Westmoreland, two hundred and sixty-two miles from London. It is on a brook running into the Eden two miles below the town. Near it are the ruins of a castle belonging to the Earl of Thanet, the prospects around which are very magnificent. It has a market on Tuesday. The inhabitants amounted in 1801 to 694, in 1811 to 758, and in 1821 to 940.
