a town of Spain, in the province of Estremadura. It is situated on the left bank of the Tagus, between Alcantara and Truxillo, and principally known from giving its name to a particular kind of Merino wool, of a second or third rate fineness. It contains 8000 inhabitants, and has twenty-six tanneries, which employ sixty-two workmen, and complete 16,680 pieces; it has also three potteries, seven rope-walks, and four dyeing houses.
