a market and borough town in the hundred of the same name in Wiltshire, ninety-one miles from London, on the road to Bath. It is chiefly built of stone raised in the neighbourhood. It is situated on the river Marl, which runs through the lower part of the town. The market is held on Tuesday. The greater part of the inhabitants are occupied in the woollen trade. The population consisted in 1811 of 3547, in 1821 of 4549, and in 1831 of 4795.
