an arrondissement of the department of the Eure and Loire, in France, extending over 858 square miles. It is divided into eight cantons, and these into 166 communes, containing 98,350 inhabitants. The chief city bears the same name, and is situated in a fertile district, on the banks of the Eure. It is surrounded by walls; the houses are in an antique fashion, and the streets narrow and crooked. It contains 2000 houses and 13,000 inhabitants. There is much industry applied to the making of hats, hosiery, and in tanning leather; and a considerable trade is carried on in wheat and other corn.
