a town of Ireland, in the county of Monaghan, and province of Ulster. It is a place of considerable antiquity. An abbey for regular canons was founded here in the beginning of the sixth century. Near the town are the ruins of an abbey and chapel, two Danish raths, and one of the ancient pillar towers peculiar to Ireland. It is distant from Dublin eight-five miles north-west by north. The population amounts to 2240.
