in Mineralogy, a variety of garnet generally possessing a dark colour and a vitreous, half-fused-like appearance. It occurs massive, or in large granular concretions; has a specific gravity of 4-0, and is met with in the beds of magnetic iron at Arendal in Norway, in Piedmont, and also in Ceylon.
