a town in the parish of Astbury, and hundred of Northwick, in Cheshire, 162 miles from London. A great trade in silk is carried on at this place, and there is a market on Saturday. The inhabitants amounted in 1801 to 3861, in 1811 to 4616, and in 1821 to 6405.
