GÉRALD DE, a philosopher and historian, born at Paris about the beginning of the seventeenth century, made himself known to M. Bossuet, who placed him about the dauphin in the quality of reader. He instructed that young prince with great assiduity, and in 1675 was received into the French Academy. He wrote a general history of France during the first races of the French kings, in two volumes, Paris, 1685 and 1689, folio; six discourses on the distinction between Body and Soul, Paris, 1666, 12mo; A Physical Discourse on Language, Paris, 1668, 1677, 12mo; Treatises on Metaphysics, History, and Politics, Paris, 1691, 12mo; and other works. The collected edition of his works, under the title of Œuvres de Cordemoi, appeared at Paris in 1704, 4to. He died in 1684. M. Cordemoi followed the principles of Descartes.
