a town of the hundred of Exminster, in Devonshire, 177 miles from London. It is one of those places which have grown from a village to a town since the fashion of sea-bathing has extended itself. The inhabitants amounted in 1801 to 1424, in 1811 to 1882, in 1821 to 2700, and in 1831 to 3151.
