a town of the hundred of Lexden, in the county of Essex, fifty-three miles from London, and situated in a pleasant valley on the river Stour. It has a good market on Thursday. The inhabitants amounted in 1801 to 1537, in 1811 to 1432, in 1821 to 1651, and in 1831 to 1770.
