a market-town in the north riding of the county of York, 208 miles from London and 11 from York. It is in the wapentake of Bulmer. It has a market on Friday, where much butter and bacon, cured in the neighbourhood, are disposed of for distant places. The population amounted in 1801 to 1467, in 1811 to 1576, in 1821 to 1912, and in 1831 to 2381.
