a parish in the county of Middlesex, seven miles from London, on the great north-east road. It is situated in the hundred of the same name, and contains many of the residences of the more wealthy citizens of London. The new river is conducted through it. The population amounted in 1801 to 5993, in 1811 to 7824, in 1821 to 7900, and in 1831 to 8192.
