a market-town of the ward of Allerdale, in Cumberland, about five miles from the sea, and 290 from London. It formerly returned members to Parliament; and the family of Wyndham derive from a castle near it, now dilapidated, the title of earl. The market is held on Saturday. The population amounted in 1801 to 1515, in 1811 to 1741, and in 1831 to 1741.
