a city of North Holland, in the circle of Hoorn. It is situated on the Zuider Zee, and is strongly fortified both on the land and on the sea side. It contains 2600 houses and 6950 inhabitants, who carry on extensive fisheries, have considerable trade in cheese and wood, and refine much salt.
