a town of the county of Surrey, fifteen miles from London. It was formerly frequented on account of its saline springs, and is now so on account of the races held on the down near it. County meetings are generally held here. The neighbourhood abounds with elegant seats of the nobility and gentry. The population amounted in 1801 to 2404, in 1811 to 2515, in 1821 to 2890, and in 1831 to 3231.
