in Ecclesiastical History, a term used to denote slaves, who, having fled to any church for sanctuary, were excused and pardoned by their masters; but the latter were obliged to take an oath to this effect before they could recover the fugitives; and, if they broke it, they were punished and fined as persons guilty of perjury.
