in Heraldry, is the whole surface of the shield or the continent, so called because it contains those achievements anciently acquired in the field of battle. It is the ground on which the colours, bearing, metals, furs, charges, and the like, are represented.

FIELD-Book, in Surveying, a book in which the angles, stations, distances, &c., are set down.

FIELD-Colours, or Camp-Colours, in war, are small flags of about a foot and a half square, which are carried along with the quartermaster-general, to mark out the ground for the squadrons and battalions.

FIELD-Pieces, cannons of small calibre, from three to twelve pounders, which are carried along with an army in the field.
