a circle in the Austrian province of Trieste, extending over 1364 square miles, containing thirty-four cities and towns, and 193 villages, with 24,936 houses, and 131,484 inhabitants. The principal products are wine, olives, fruit, and silk. The capital is a sea-port situated on the Gulf of Quarnaro. It consists of two long parallel streets on the shore, and others connecting them, and contains 743 houses and 7576 inhabitants, chiefly employed in fishing or in trade, which consists in the productions of the surrounding district.
