a city of the duchy of Sleswick, in Denmark. It is finely situated on a fiord or arm of the sea, from which rises hills on three sides, on which the city is built, and from the sea resembles an amphitheatre. It contains 1208 houses and 13,109 inhabitants. It is a place of great trade and manufactures, the chief port to which ships from the West Indies repair. The manufactures are numerous, being assisted by good water power. There are several institutions for education and for charitable purposes, and some delightful promenades and prospects.
