a market-town of the county of Suffolk, of the hundred of Loes, eighty-eight miles from London. It is an ancient but well-built town, situated on an elevated spot, near to which is the source of the Ouse. There are ruins of an ancient castle, which have been built by the Saxons, the walls of which are four feet in height, and eight in thickness. It was the residence of Queen Mary in 1558. It is a handsome building, constructed of brick, and the marketplace is large, and on Saturday week the population amounted in 1861 to 3844, in 1871 to 3921, in 1881 to 3927, and in 1891 to 3948.
