a market-town of the county of Lancaster, in the hundred of Amounderness, 238 miles from London. It was incorporated by Charles II., but returned no member to parliament. There is a market on Thursday. The population amounted in 1801 to 781, in 1811 to 790, in 1821 to 936, and in 1831 to 929.
