the chief town of Prince of Wales' Island, which is well built, having spacious streets running at right angles. It is bounded on the north and east by the sea, and on the west by a high road.

It is situated on the north-eastern bank of the Potomac, about two hundred miles from its mouth, and three from Washington, the capital. It possesses several public buildings, institutions, places of public worship, schools, and the like, and is a place of considerable trade. In consequence of the difficulties of navigation occasioned by a bar about three miles below the town, a considerable part of the produce is sent to Alexandria for exportation. Georgetown College is a Catholic institution, under the direction of the incorporated Catholic clergy of Maryland. The population of this town in 1830 amounted to 8441.
