GONDOLA

Volume 10 · 51 words · 1842 Edition

a flat boat, very long and narrow, and chiefly used at Venice for rowing on the canals. The word is Italian, gondola. Du Cange derives it from the modern Greek σκούραξ, a bark or little ship; but Lancelot deduces it from γόνδη, a term in Athenæus for a sort of vase.
