an ancient city of Romania, being the see of an archbishop of the Greek church, and also a seaport. It was a famous place in former times, and there are still some remains of its ancient splendour. Theodore Lascaris took it from David Comnenus, emperor of Trebizond, after which it fell into the hands of the Genoese; but Mahommed II. took it from them, and since that time it has been in the possession of the Turks.
