a town of Hindustan, in the Mysore rajah's territories. The fort is of a square form, with towers at the angles, and two on each face. In 1792 this fort was taken by the British, and completely sacked and destroyed by the Mahrattas. Prior to this invasion the country was flourishing and well cultivated; but so dreadful was the havoc occasioned by the Mahrattas, that, according to the statement of one officer, every evening when the army encamped they could count ten villages in flames.
