a town in the south of Hindustan, and province of North Canara. The principal inhabitants consist of Concanies, or the descendants of the natives of the Concan, who, according to the account of Dr Buchanan, fled thither from the Portuguese settlement of Goa, in order to avoid the persecutions of the Portuguese Catholics, who were desirous to convert them to the Christian faith.
