a town of the county of Somerset, in the hundred of North Petherton, 155 miles from London. It stands on an estuary at the mouth of the river Parret, which there falls into the Bristol Channel. The inhabitants amounted in 1801 to 1912, in 1811 to 1119, in 1821 to 1337, and in 1831 to 1503.
