a town of the hundred of Penwith, in the county of Cornwall, 266 miles from London. It is in a mining district, which affords employment to the people, especially in one of the richest of the copper mines, called Cook's Kitchen, which is within the parish. The inhabitants amounted in 1801 to 2895, in 1811 to 4078, in 1821 to 5170, and in 1831 to 6072.
